Police team up to offer free taxi rides home

It's make a lot a sense to try to prevent people from driving while intoxicated, or driving under the inluence. Traditionally, the solution has been to enact stricter and tougher laws. The fact that DWI offenses aren't declining suggests that doesn't work. That shouldn't be a surprise, since throwing more people hasn't had an affect on the crime rate.

The Tacoma Washington DUI traffic and safety force decided on a unique approach. The teamed up with several businesses to offer taxi rides home from local hotspot. They offer a little incentive by placing a police cruiser next to a taxi and asking which one you want to ride home in - pretty clever. I don't know what kind of response they got, but it looks like a great idea.

Even though I represent persons charged with driving while intoxicated, I never want to see anyone drive drunk and put themselves and their families in danger. Ideas like this might cut down on the criminal defense business - which is a good thing.
