Take advantage of the downtime to clear up your record so it doesn't become a problem later

Everyone does stupid stuff when they are young. It's all part of growing up; some things you just have to learn the hard way. Fortunately, most of us were able to put those things behind us. If you were unlucky enough to be arrested you have a record that you're going to carry with you the rest of your life. In some cases, even a ticket or citation can have consequences.

You may have put this behind you and don't even think about anymore. It's not until someone asks about it that you remember. By then, it's usually too late.

The question can up more often than you think.

  • You are applying for a job and have to fill out an application
  • You're filling out a rental application
  • You're applying for a loan or credit
  • You're trying to further your career and obtain an advanced degree
  • You're applying for a professional license or certificate
  • You're called for jury service

There are other situations where the question may arise that you would never think of.

Fortunately, there is a way to clear your record so this doesn't become a problem.

Petitions of Expunction

If the charges against you were dismissed or not pursued you may be eligible to expunge your record. If you want more information we have two resources available to you. These are checklists that contain the same questions we would ask if you called us.

If the charges against you were dismissed or never filed, or if you went to trial and were found not guilty, go  here.

Order for Non-Disclosure

Even if the charges were dismissed you may still qualify for another form of relief, which is an Order for Non-Disclosure. To see if you qualify for that, go here.

Now is a great time to start this process. Most of the time these cases do not require hearings, and in some cases agreed orders can be submitted. Even when hearings are necessary, you may be able to do it through zoom. Since the Courts are not as busy you have a better chance of getting your petition through quickly. Once things go back to normal that will not be the case. So, if you’ve ever considered doing this, now is the perfect time to do so.

Maybe more importantly, if you are in the situation where you have to find another job, it will be more important that ever to make sure you do that with a clear record.
